HELP!!! Early noblemen acquired BEFORE having an academy

One of my tribe members was awarded 3 noblemen in the current contest, but he doesn't yet have an academy built. Should he leave them in his inventory until such time as he does, or can he bring them on board and use them? AND...if he tries to bring them on board without an academy, will he lose them? Inquiring minds want to know.

as long as he has 300 provisions open he can use the with out an academy
