Why do you need clay to recruit troops/units? Seems silly to me. Clay is a building material; troops are not made of clay, weapons, save for maybe the projectiles for catapults and trebuchets, are not made from clay. I don't get it. One thing that would be nice, if we are to use clay for recruiting and buildings, would be for the clay pit to have a built in, permanent, production boost, as it is pretty much the most used resource.

In the same regard, I don't think swordsmen need wood. haha

It's just to help balance out the need for additional resource balancing, as many other games may do. Also, clay is only the most dependent according to what you are building in that village. In the early game, Wood is the most demanding with metal far behind clay, Later in the game, you won't have enough iron for all the HCs you want to recruit, or the berserkers.
