If you look at the Market Offers (in Alnwick) you see that everyone wants Clay, and no one wants Iron because as you advance in the game you always have too much Iron and not enough Clay. While this points to a balancing issue in the resource requirements, that's not my suggestion. I think that there should be a way (perhaps a technology) that allows a player to unlock the trade ratio from 1:1. That way the market could develop in each world, you could trade 2000, 2500, or even 10000 of a resource for as little in return as you are willing to accept based on need and distance (maybe you're willing to pay more if it's close, less if it's far).
